Chapter Thirty-Two

Jane

I’m going to be discharged this afternoon, which I feel indifferent about. It’s good because nobody likes to stay in a hospital, but I feel uneasy about staying home with my parents, who insist I should be staying with them. It also doesn’t feel right to stay with my parents while my wounds heal. I have found myself in a dangerous situation where these people are absolute lunatics, and they are watching Nash’s house.

They might still be watching my flat, which means they’d know I was there. What makes me think they won’t be watching my parents’ house too? What if they try to hurt them? I haven’t heard anything from Lydia, but Nash called, and he offered for me to stay with him. I’m unsure if this is a good idea, but I call my parents and tell them where I’ll be staying. They aren’t reassured. They must think he is another man who might be harmed. Do they think that? At around four, the doctor comes to see me, signs the papers, and I am free to go.

Nash comes half an hour later. He looks fine; he is not a man who has been hit on the head, but he is stunning.

He helps me with the bags and tells me to take it easy.

‘Traffic is insane today,’ he says. ‘Most drivers here are not even qualified to drive! Who issued their driver's license?’

‘Let’s not get into that.’

The last thing I want to talk about is corruption.

‘How is your head?’ I ask.

‘My ears are still ringing, the head hurts, and if I catch whoever did this, they are dead.’

‘Now there will be no killing of anyone,’ I say.

‘They have it coming,’ he reasons.

We make it to the garage and to his car. His car is a plush black Range Rover which sparkles and shines beside a tatty old Ford Fiesta with a broken headlight. Honestly, I don’t know how some cars pass the VRT test. Nash pushes a button and the Range Rover beeps and comes alive, and he opens the car door for me. I hoped to find the cats there, but why would he bring them along when home was safer?

‘Did you hear anything from Lydia?’

‘Nope.’

‘And did you see anything suspicious before you were hit?’

‘No.’

‘So we are stuck with no idea who is behind this.’

‘You said they could be local, given foreigners wouldn’t know all those details about the church.’

‘Well, they could be a foreigner. If they lived here long enough, they would know about the history of this island.’

Then thoughts come to me. Nash starts the car and casts me a sideways glance.

‘What?’ he asks.

‘It’s nothing.’

He brakes and blares the horn at a driver who doesn’t stop at the stop sign.

‘Fucker!’ Nash yells from the window. ‘Why is everyone so angry on this island?’

‘Overpopulation, pollution, too many cars, stress, and the heat.’

‘It’s winter,’ he points out.

‘It’s still hot even in winter.’

He says nothing about this and turns on the roundabout. ‘Are you going to tell me what you were thinking?’

‘I was thinking of visiting Austin.
